Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2023 Keller
English Version
Overview
The Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2023 Keller is one of the finest expressions of dry Riesling from Rheinhessen, coming from a vineyard renowned worldwide. The Kirchspiel vineyard, with its natural amphitheater shape and calcareous soils, produces wines of extraordinary elegance and depth. The 2023 vintage, marked by a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness, resulted in a Riesling vibrant, saline, and long-lived, already appealing today but destined to reveal its full potential over many years.
History
The Kirchspiel vineyard is one of Westhofen’s most celebrated sites, recognized for centuries for its exceptional grape quality. Sheltered by surrounding hills with optimal southeast exposure, it allows vines to receive consistent sunlight and balanced airflow. Since 1789, the Keller family has safeguarded this heritage, making Kirchspiel a reference point for world-class Riesling. The 2023 vintage, with balanced summer weather and cool nights, produced concentrated berries with pure aromas, highlighting the vineyard’s crystalline character.
Vineyard Philosophy
Viticulture in Kirchspiel follows a handcrafted and sustainable approach, with minimal intervention and maximum respect for the ecosystem. The calcareous and clay soils provide mineral salinity and vibrant tension, while manual harvesting selects only the finest clusters. In 2023, diurnal temperature swings helped preserve acidity and aromatic complexity, crucial for producing a precise Riesling.
Winemaking Approach
In the cellar, Keller applies natural and terroir-driven vinification techniques. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and large neutral oak casks. Several months of aging enhance structure, complexity, and aromatic finesse. Sulphur is used minimally, ensuring an authentic wine that fully expresses the Kirchspiel terroir.
Tasting Notes
Color: intense straw yellow with luminous reflections.
Nose: complex and refined, with notes of ripe citrus, lime, yellow peach, aromatic herbs, and pronounced flinty minerality.
Palate: dry, dense, and vibrant, with crisp acidity, profound structure, and a long, saline finish that leaves a lasting impression.
Pairings
This Riesling pairs beautifully with shellfish, raw fish, sushi and sashimi, delicate white meats, spiced dishes, and mature cheeses. It works perfectly as a gastronomic wine or a meditation wine to enjoy slowly and appreciate all its nuances.
