Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2022 Keller
Overview
The Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2022 Keller is one of Rheinhessen’s finest expressions of dry Riesling, coming from the renowned Kirchspiel vineyard. The cru, famous for its calcareous soils and optimal southeast exposure, produces wines of extraordinary finesse, elegance, and minerality. The 2022 vintage, marked by a temperate spring and a balanced summer, yielded healthy and perfectly ripe grapes, resulting in a Riesling fresh, vibrant, and harmonious, already enjoyable but destined to develop beautifully over the coming years.
History
The Kirchspiel vineyard has a centuries-long tradition, carefully maintained by the Keller family since 1789. This vineyard is considered one of Westhofen’s best, thanks to its natural amphitheater protecting the vines and the ideal drainage of calcareous soils. Its classification as a Grosses Gewächs (GG) confirms its status among Germany’s top vineyard sites. The 2022 vintage produced grapes with perfect balance of acidity, sugar, and aromatic ripeness, giving rise to a Riesling clean, mineral, and highly elegant.
Vineyard Philosophy
Vineyard management follows handcrafted and sustainable principles, with manual harvesting and careful interventions to preserve fruit and soil health. The calcareous soils provide tension and salinity, while the exposure ensures uniform ripening. The 2022 vintage emphasized natural acidity, aromatic freshness, and longevity, essential for a highly precise Riesling.
Winemaking Approach
In the cellar, Keller employs natural, fruit-driven winemaking techniques. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and large neutral oak casks, preserving the purity of the terroir and variety. Several months of aging allow the wine to develop structure, complexity, and aromatic finesse. Sulphur is used minimally to ensure authenticity and faithful expression of the Kirchspiel terroir.
Tasting Notes
Color: luminous straw-yellow with golden highlights.
Nose: intense and refined, with ripe citrus, yellow peach, lime, aromatic herbs, and flinty minerality.
Palate: dry, vertical, and vibrant, with fresh, bright acidity, full structure, and a long, saline, persistent finish. A Riesling already enjoyable, but with great aging potential.
Pairings
Pairs beautifully with shellfish, raw fish, sushi and sashimi, delicate white meats, spiced dishes, and mature cheeses. Also excellent as a meditation wine, to be enjoyed slowly to appreciate all the nuances of the Kirchspiel terroir.
