Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2020 Keller
Overview
The Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling Trocken GG 2020 Keller is one of the most iconic dry Rieslings from Rheinhessen and a flagship wine of the Keller family. Coming from the prestigious Kirchspiel vineyard, this wine combines elegance, minerality, and aging potential. The 2020 vintage offers a complex, powerful, yet refined Riesling, already charming today but destined to evolve beautifully over decades.
History
The Kirchspiel vineyard, shaped like a natural amphitheater, has been celebrated for centuries for its calcareous soils and perfect exposure. Classified as a Grosses Gewächs (GG), it belongs to the elite group of VDP Grosse Lage sites in Germany. Since 1789, the Keller family has nurtured this terroir, enhancing its international reputation. The 2020 vintage, marked by healthy grapes and balanced ripening, delivered a Riesling with exceptional concentration, finesse, and purity.
Vineyard Philosophy
Viticulture is entirely manual and sustainable, with a focus on precision and respect for nature. Calcareous soils provide tension and salinity, while optimal exposure ensures perfect ripeness without losing freshness. The 2020 season balanced warm days and cool nights, enhancing acidity, aromatics, and ageworthiness.
Winemaking Approach
Vinification follows Keller’s philosophy of purity and precision. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts occurs in stainless steel and large neutral oak casks. Aging takes place for several months, allowing the wine to gain texture and aromatic complexity. Sulphur use is minimal, ensuring an authentic expression of fruit and terroir.
Tasting Notes
Color: intense straw-yellow with golden reflections.
Nose: layered and elegant, with citrus, ripe stone fruits, herbs, and flinty minerality.
Palate: dry, structured, and vibrant, with crisp acidity, solid texture, and a long, salty mineral finish. Great now, extraordinary in the future.
Pairings
Perfect with fine seafood, shellfish, sashimi, refined white meats, and mature cheeses. Its precision and minerality make it also an ideal meditation wine.
