Santenay 1er Cru Rouge Grand Clos Rousseau
The story of a sheltered and prestigious vineyard
The Santenay 1er Cru Grand Clos Rousseau comes from a historic plot in the southern Côte de Beaune, classified as Premier Cru since 1937. This vineyard, protected by traditional dry stone walls (murgers), is shielded from the winds and benefits from an ideal microclimate to fully express the Pinot Noir’s potential. The Nouveau family has farmed here for generations, maintaining low yields and eco-friendly viticulture for impeccable grape quality.
Philosophy in the vineyard
The vines, aged between 30 and 62 years, thrive in marl and clay-limestone soils at 250 meters above sea level, on slopes facing the morning sun. Vineyard management is meticulous: short pruning, cluster thinning and green harvesting guarantee low yields and rich aromas. Since 2021, the domaine has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3, proof of a constant commitment to sustainability.
Approach in the cellar
Harvested by hand at full maturity, the grapes are fully destemmed. Fermentation starts with a cold pre-fermentation phase and continues for 15-18 days with délestage for gentle extraction. The wine matures for 12 months in barrels and a further 6 months in tanks, without fining or filtration. Deep purple colour, on the nose notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, vanilla and spices, on the palate complex, supple body, silky tannins and a long finish.
