Marsannay La Montagne 2023 – Sylvain Pataille
Overview
The Marsannay La Montagne 2023 by Sylvain Pataille is a refined yet assertive red Burgundy, fully expressing the character of the Marsannay-la-Côte terroir. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it combines minerality, elegance, and lively freshness. The 2023 vintage offers balance and vibrancy, resulting in a wine both immediately enjoyable and suitable for cellaring, emblematic of Pataille’s precise, authentic style.
Wine History
The “La Montagne” cuvée originates from select hillside plots in Marsannay, planted on lean, stony, and limestone-rich soils. These conditions produce grapes of great aromatic purity and structural precision. Sylvain Pataille’s mission has been to highlight lesser-known sites of the Côte de Nuits, proving their potential to produce wines of real finesse and energy. The 2023 harvest benefited from mild weather and an ideal ripening season, yielding balanced and expressive fruit.
Vineyard Philosophy
Pataille’s work in the vineyard follows the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture, emphasizing soil vitality and natural balance. The vines, rooted in thin calcareous soils, produce limited yields with high aromatic concentration. Manual work, natural composts, and minimal treatments allow the terroir to speak freely, expressing the purity and vibrancy typical of the Marsannay hillsides.
Winemaking Approach
True to his philosophy of minimal intervention, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, often including a portion of whole clusters. Gentle extraction preserves fruit definition and texture. The wine ages for an extended period in French oak barrels (mostly used) to promote natural evolution and complexity. The result is a Pinot Noir of striking transparency, fine structure, and graceful minerality.
Tasting Notes
Color: medium-deep ruby with bright violet reflections.
Nose: red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, rose petal, and hints of spice and wet stone.
Palate: lively and juicy entry, fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, savory, mineral finish.
Food Pairing
Excellent with roasted poultry, rabbit stew, or veal. Complements dishes with mushrooms, grilled vegetables, or medium-aged cheeses. Its freshness and precision also pair beautifully with duck breast or creamy risottos.

The History of Sylvain Pataille
The Sylvain Pataille Winery was born in the heart of Marsannay-la-Côte, in the Côte de Nuits, one of Burgundy’s most fascinating regions. Founded in the early 2000s, the estate represents the vision of an oenologist trained among the greatest names of the region, determined to rediscover Marsannay’s authentic identity. Sylvain, a true son of Burgundy, began with just a few hectares and an uncommon determination: to give voice back to the terroir. Over the years, the estate grew to become a symbol of a new generation of independent winemakers, capable of combining tradition, technical precision, and ecological awareness. Each harvest is a testament to a coherent journey rooted in patient observation of nature and a deep understanding of the soil.
Philosophy in the Vineyard
In the vineyards, Sylvain Pataille follows an approach of organic and biodynamic viticulture, certified and deeply respectful of natural balance. The vines, some over fifty years old, are cared for with artisanal dedication, avoiding synthetic chemicals and favouring natural treatments. The goal is to preserve soil life and enhance the expression of Marsannay’s terroir — a mosaic of marl and limestone capable of producing complex and profound wines. Pruning, soil management, and controlled yields lead to healthy, concentrated grapes in which the beauty of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay finds its purest, most authentic form.
Approach in the Cellar
Inside the cellar, Sylvain Pataille’s philosophy is clear: intervene as little as possible to express as much as possible. Fermentations occur with native yeasts, and temperature control is minimal to respect the natural evolution of the wine. Macerations are extended gently, allowing a slow and harmonious extraction of tannins. Vinifications take place in wooden and steel vats, followed by ageing in used oak barrels to respect fruit purity. Each wine is bottled without heavy filtration or clarification, preserving aromatic integrity and original structure. Meticulous attention to detail makes every cuvée an honest reflection of its place of origin.
A Visionary of Marsannay’s Terroir
Today, Sylvain Pataille is recognised as one of the great interpreters of contemporary Burgundian terroir. His wines, deeply mineral and vibrant, have helped restore Marsannay among the most respected appellations of the Côte d’Or. His vision unites scientific rigour and human sensitivity: he is an oenological consultant for many producers in the region, yet remains deeply connected to his land. His name stands for authenticity, balance, and territorial identity. Each bottle signed by Pataille is the result of absolute coherence between thought and gesture, vineyard and cellar, man and nature.
