Carlania Celler Els Plans 2017
Overview
Carlania Celler Els Plans 2017 is a captivating red wine crafted from a unique blend of Merlot (75%) and Trepat (25%). Each variety is vinified differently: Merlot undergoes long maceration to enhance structure and body, while Trepat is made using carbonic maceration, giving freshness, vibrancy, and aromatic lift. The result is a complex and elegant red wine that balances power and finesse, showcasing Carlania Celler’s philosophy of combining tradition with innovation.
Vineyard and philosophy
The grapes come from vineyards in Barberà de la Conca, planted on clay-limestone soils at altitudes between 400 and 500 meters. The region’s microclimate, with warm days and cool nights, allows for slow ripening and excellent aromatic development. The estate follows certified organic farming, with a strong commitment to biodiversity. Harvest is carried out by hand, selecting the grapes at their optimal ripeness for balance and expression.
Winemaking approach
Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures (23–25 ºC) with macerations lasting 8 to 15 days depending on grape maturity. The Merlot’s depth combines with the Trepat’s freshness to form a balanced structure. After malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for 12 months in used French oak barrels, which refine its profile while preserving varietal purity. This careful process reflects Carlania’s philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum authenticity.
Tasting notes
Colour: deep ruby-red with violet highlights.
Nose: floral hints of violet, ripe red fruit, and subtle spicy notes.
Palate: full-bodied yet fresh, with silky tannins, citrus touches from Trepat, and a long, balanced finish.
Food pairings
Ideal with roast lamb, grilled beef, cured meats, and Mediterranean cuisine. Excellent with pasta in rich sauces, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses.

Carlania Celler – A family story of biodiversity and innovation
The origins of Carlania Celler
The story of Carlania Celler begins in Barberà de la Conca, in north-eastern Spain, where a family project chose to merge tradition with innovation. From the outset, the winery has embraced a philosophy of respect for the land and a commitment to local grape varieties. The adoption of biodynamic farming is not just a technique, but a statement of intent that puts biodiversity, natural balance, and the preservation of the landscape at the centre of their work.
Philosophy in the vineyard
At altitudes between 400 and 500 metres, Carlania Celler cultivates its vines with full respect for nature. The soils are farmed without chemicals and enriched through organic practices certified by the CCPAE, ensuring the purity and vitality of the fruit. Each vineyard parcel is managed to preserve natural biodiversity, resulting in healthy grapes that carry the authentic character of their terroir.
Winemaking approach
In the cellar, the same philosophy continues, favouring minimal intervention. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are matured in a way that respects their varietal expression. Every step of the process is designed to highlight the uniqueness of the grapes and the land, producing wines that are both innovative and deeply rooted in local tradition.
Identity and connection to the land
A key emblem of Carlania Celler is the Trepat, a native grape that thrives on the hills of Barberà de la Conca. Many of the winery’s labels are dedicated to showcasing this variety, alongside other indigenous grapes. Since joining the Nursery of Winemakers project in 2007, Carlania has also opened a small local wine bar, a place where visitors can taste, learn, and experience the bond between product and territory.
