Catavela 2023: A fresh, mineral wine with a distinctive character
Catavela 2023 is a white wine born from a handcrafted blend designed to express the authenticity and purity of the Piacenza terroir. Created by Giulio Armani and produced by Denavolo, Catavela strikes the perfect balance between tradition and innovation, with a natural approach that highlights the deep connection to the land. It’s a wine distinguished by its freshness, fine aromatic profile, and minerality—ideal for those seeking a unique sensory experience.
In the vineyard: Piacenza terroir and natural cultivation
The grapes for Catavela 2023 come from vineyards located in the higher elevations of the Colli Piacentini, where the calcareous and clay soils impart a distinct mineral character to the wine. The grapes are hand-harvested, with only the finest clusters selected. The farming is completely natural, with no use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Each vintage presents a challenge for the vines, constantly tested by difficult weather conditions, yet always producing superior-quality grapes.
In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation and aging in steel
In the cellar, Catavela 2023 follows a traditional yet innovative winemaking process. The fermentation happens spontaneously, thanks to the natural yeasts found on the grape skins. The wine undergoes a short maceration to extract its aromas without overpowering the profile. It then ages in stainless steel tanks, which preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit expression. As per the winery’s philosophy, no sulfur is added, and no filtration takes place.
Tasting profile: fresh, mineral, elegant
Catavela 2023 shows a clear, pale straw-yellow color in the glass. On the nose, aromas of green apple, white peach, and floral notes of chamomile are complemented by a slight touch of fresh herbs. On the palate, the wine is fresh, taut, with a pronounced minerality that makes each sip elegant and fluid. The finish is dry and clean, with a pleasantly salty aftertaste that invites another sip.

Denavolo by Giulio Armani: the artisanal soul of the Colli Piacentini
Denavolo is the winery founded in 2005 by Giulio Armani, a charismatic figure in Italian natural wine and longtime winemaker at the nearby La Stoppa estate. Located in Travo, on the Colli Piacentini between the Trebbia and Nure valleys in Emilia-Romagna, the winery embodies a radical and consistent vision of artisanal white wine — an honest expression of altitude, soil, and time.
The vineyards, planted between 350 and 700 meters above sea level on calcareous-clay soils, are farmed naturally, without chemicals or synthetic treatments. Biodiversity is preserved, and every action in the vineyard is guided by deep respect for the environment. In the cellar, Giulio Armani works with spontaneous fermentations, extended skin contact, and avoids any clarification or filtration. His wines, mostly whites from native varieties such as Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo, Marsanne, and Trebbiano, are deep, textural, slightly oxidative, and capable of fascinating evolution.
Denavolo means living wine — dynamic, wild, and free from convention. Each bottle reflects the spirit of a place and the intuition of a winemaker in total harmony with nature.
