The Carso’s ancient red

Teran 2022 by Skerk is a pure, electric expression of this native red grape, cultivated on the white, rocky limestone soils of the Trieste Karst. Often wild and rustic, Teran becomes in Sandi Skerk’s hands a wine of depth, tension and unmistakable identity.

Fermented with around 20 days of skin contact, the wine is vinified naturally with wild yeasts, no temperature control and no additives. It is then aged for 2 years in large oak barrels, unfiltered and with no added sulfur.

On the nose, it reveals graphite, wild herbs, blueberries and black pepper. The palate is taut, juicy, salty and vibrant, with the grape’s naturally high acidity tamed into elegance. A red for thinkers, not just drinkers.

A vineyard rooted in stone

The Skerk winery, founded by Sandi Skerk, is located in Prepotto, Duino-Aurisina, in the heart of Italy’s Karst region near the Slovenian border. Shaped by limestone soils, sea winds and strong diurnal shifts, Skerk’s wines reflect a deep sense of place. The vineyard is dry-farmed, tended naturally, with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.

Philosophy: vineyard and cellar

Skerk grows indigenous grapes like Vitovska, Malvasia Istriana, Terrano, alongside Refosco and Sauvignon. Yields are kept low and harvest is done by hand. In the cellar, long skin macerations and spontaneous fermentations occur in open oak vats. No additives or filtration. Wines are aged in large old barrels in a natural stone cellar. The result is wines with depth, salinity and character.
