Sagrantino di Montefalco 2018 – Lorenzo Mattoni
Overview
The Sagrantino di Montefalco 2018 represents the pinnacle of Umbrian red wines, a pure expression of the Bevagna territory and Lorenzo Mattoni’s family vineyards. This wine is born from the desire to highlight the identity of Sagrantino, a native grape known for its intense tannins and the ability to evolve over time while maintaining elegance and complexity. Natural winemaking and meticulous vineyard care ensure a unique product, capable of conveying the Umbria terroir in every sip.
Wine History
The first vintage of Montefalco Sagrantino by Lorenzo Mattoni was 2014, and since then the winery has focused on producing this local excellence, respecting traditional and natural methods. The 2018 vintage stands out for favorable weather, allowing optimal grape ripening. The result is an intense and complex wine that fully expresses the grape’s identity and the typicity of the Bevagna territory.
Vineyard Philosophy
The Sagrantino 2018 vineyards have an average age of 28 years and are cultivated according to natural viticulture principles, without irrigation and with minimal human intervention. Careful management of the calcareous-clay soils and respect for the natural vine cycle allow healthy and ripe grapes, rich in aromas and quality tannins. Harvesting is entirely manual, ensuring the selection of the best grapes and preserving the integrity of the clusters.
Winery Approach
Fermentation takes place in cement tanks, where the must ferments naturally with indigenous yeasts. Aging occurs in 30-hectoliter wooden barrels for 18-20 months, allowing the wine to develop structure, balance, and complexity. No fining or filtration is performed, and sulfur dioxide addition is kept to a minimum. This approach enhances the authentic character of Sagrantino, highlighting tannins, minerality, and fruity aromas.
Tasting Notes and Pairings
Color: intense ruby red with garnet reflections.
Nose: complex aromas of ripe red fruits, sweet spices, and balsamic notes.
Palate: full-bodied, tannic, with robust structure and persistent finish.
The Sagrantino di Montefalco 2018 pairs perfectly with red meats, roasts, game, and aged cheeses, enhancing each dish with its elegance and depth.

Lorenzo Mattoni Wines, Bevagna, Umbria
History of Lorenzo Mattoni
Lorenzo Mattoni began his winemaking journey in 2013, aiming to enhance his family vineyards in Bevagna, in the heart of Umbria. The project originated from his father, Lodovico, from whom Lorenzo inherited his passion and love for wine. The goal was to recover hectares of land to cultivate the indigenous Sagrantino grape and produce it as a dry wine, in contrast to the traditional passito style. His brother Nicola actively participates, offering valuable support in the winery.
Vineyard Philosophy
The vineyards, covering about 9 hectares, are cultivated without irrigation, fully respecting nature and the family’s agricultural traditions. The calcareous-clay soils and spur-pruned training preserve the identity of the terroir. Lorenzo, assisted by a geologist, carefully studies the soils and harvests according to the natural composition of the land, aiming for an elegant and balanced Sagrantino that maintains the characteristic tannin of the variety.
Winery Approach
In the winery, the goal is not to alter the result of nature. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled cement tanks, while red wines are aged in 30-hectoliter wooden barrels. This method enhances the fruit, aromas, and structure of the wine while preserving its authentic character.
Main Labels
The first vintage of Montefalco Sagrantino was in 2014. In 2019, “Dinamico” was introduced, a red wine based on Sagrantino with added Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. From 2023, the estate also produces Trebbiano from a few historic family vines. Each label reflects the care in the vineyard, the Bevagna terroir, and Lorenzo Mattoni’s attention to detail.
Terroir Essence
Lorenzo Mattoni’s mission is to produce wines that evoke emotion, conveying the personality of the land and the authenticity of Umbria’s indigenous grapes. From vineyard to winery, the process reflects passion, respect for nature, and a balance between tradition and innovation, creating wines that express identity, elegance, and complexity.
