The Cesanese del Piglio “I Primi Cinque” by Marco Falcone comes from five vineyard rows inherited from the previous management, featuring a unique Cesanese clone that ripens later than the others. The vinification process includes fermentation with stems, with 30% of the mass undergoing whole-cluster fermentation and remaining on the skins for 8-9 days.
On the nose, it stands out with floral aromas of violet, rose, and peony, followed by fruity notes of cherry, blackberry, and plum, with hints of licorice and gentian and a distinct minerality. On the palate, it is fresh and mineral, with a more-than-medium body, velvety tannins, and a long finish. Despite its structure, it is exceptionally easy to drink, like all of Marco Falcone’s Cesanese wines.
Best served at 16-18°C, it pairs perfectly with game meats. Born almost by accident, this wine has proven to be a true marvel.

Marco is a man of many facets, truly surprising. Of Calabrian origins but a Roman by adoption, he is an unexpected kind of winemaker—for many reasons.
We first met him in the heart of Rome, and as we were tasting his incredible Cesanese wines, a Senator of the Republic suddenly recognized him and struck up a conversation. With infinite modesty, Marco had never mentioned that he was an esteemed researcher at the University of Pisa, specializing in infectious diseases.
His life unfolds between the university laboratories and his beloved vineyards, which he cultivates strictly according to organic farming principles. His estate covers just under three hectares, with a slightly higher-than-average planting density, in line with his winery’s philosophy. Once again, he challenges common assumptions. He employs Spanish and Tuscan amphorae for aging.
His Cesanese del Piglio wines are not opulent but incredibly drinkable, delicious, and natural. Cantina Falcone avoids the use of any chemical agents in the vineyard, even when abstaining presents significant production risks. There are no shortcuts in the cellar either—his wines stand out for their minimal sulfur content, around 10 mg per liter.
