Derthona Timorasso 2022 – White Wine
Overview
The Derthona Timorasso 2022 by Valli Unite is a white wine of strong identity, expressing the soul of Costa Vescovato, in Piedmont’s Tortona hills. Made from 100% Timorasso grapes and aged entirely in stainless steel, it captures the natural freshness and mineral intensity of this rare local variety. It embodies the cooperative’s philosophy of authentic, precise and living wines, revealing both purity and depth in every sip.
Wine History
Timorasso is an ancient Piedmontese grape, native to the Tortona area and revived by small producers like Valli Unite. The name Derthona refers to the historic name of Tortona, symbol of the grape’s roots and terroir. The 2022 vintage, marked by a warm yet balanced season, delivered healthy, concentrated grapes full of extract and aroma. The result is a wine of strong character and natural elegance, capable of aging gracefully while expressing its territory with honesty.
Philosophy in the Vineyard
The vineyards are organically farmed, located on clay-limestone slopes at 250–300 meters above sea level. No chemicals or herbicides are used; the soil is enriched with home-produced organic compost and green manure of leguminous plants. Low yields and manual harvest ensure concentration and integrity of flavor. For Valli Unite, the vineyard is the heart of winemaking, and every intervention aims to preserve its living balance.
Winemaking Approach
The Derthona Timorasso 2022 undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and is then aged in stainless steel on fine lees for several months. No clarifications or filtrations are applied, maintaining purity and structure. Minimal sulphur addition keeps the wine vibrant, expressive and true to its origin. The steel aging enhances the variety’s crisp minerality and the textural tension typical of great Timorasso wines.

History and Origins of Valli Unite
Founded in 1981 in Costa Vescovato, a small village in the province of Alessandria, Valli Unite was born from the vision of three young farmers who decided to join forces and create an independent and cooperative farming community. Over time, that small group has grown into nearly forty members, all sharing a common ideal that goes beyond winemaking — a true cultural and human alliance. Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Tortona area, the cooperative has built its identity on agricultural independence, respect for nature, and collective work, establishing itself as a reference point for sustainable viticulture in Piedmont.
Philosophy in the Vineyard
On its 100 hectares of land, of which 22 are dedicated to vines, Valli Unite cultivates Barbera, Timorasso, Croatina and other local varieties following a strictly organic approach. The estate includes a farm with livestock, which provides natural fertilizer for the fields, ensuring the fertility and vitality of the soil. Green manures composed of leguminous herbs enrich the land and promote biodiversity. Each vineyard is tended by hand, with minimal intervention, allowing the vines to express their true character and the landscape to retain its natural balance.
Winemaking Approach
The cellar of Valli Unite is a place where wine is guided, not manipulated. Fermentations occur without selected yeasts, letting indigenous microorganisms reveal the identity of the grapes and the land. Sulphur dioxide is added only in very low quantities (less than 40 mg/l) to preserve the wine’s vitality and purity. The goal is to produce a living, evolving wine, one that changes over time and reflects the rhythm of nature. Every technical choice is guided by patience, intuition, and deep respect for the raw material.
A Community and Cultural Project
Today, Valli Unite is much more than an agricultural cooperative — it is a self-sufficient rural community that combines viticulture, animal farming, food production, and hospitality. The estate is home to vineyards, gardens, and animals, all managed by people who share the same values of sustainability, solidarity, and simplicity. Wine is just one expression of a broader way of life — a philosophy that connects land and culture, embodying the authenticity of Piedmont’s countryside.
