Biagio Antico 2023 – Sangiovese di Romagna DOC
Overview
Biagio Antico 2023 Sangiovese di Romagna DOC is a red wine that captures the genuine soul of Romagna. Produced by Cantina Ancarani, it represents the purest expression of Sangiovese, combining freshness, balance, and character. Grown on the sunny hills of Oriolo dei Fichi, this wine reflects the harmony between soil, climate, and human touch. The result is an elegant and expressive red, full of vitality and identity — a true portrait of authentic Romagna.
History of the wine
Biagio Antico was created to bring Sangiovese back to its roots: a wine of daily pleasure, full of dignity and depth. The name recalls the Ancarani family’s rural heritage and their enduring connection with the hills of Oriolo. The 2023 vintage offered excellent balance, with a mild climate and slow ripening that enhanced structure and aromatic precision. This is a Sangiovese faithful to its land — generous, vibrant, and naturally harmonious.
Vineyard philosophy
The vineyards are cultivated with organic and sustainable methods, respecting the natural rhythm of the vines. The manual harvest, with careful selection of the best clusters, ensures only the finest grapes reach the cellar. The sandy and calcareous soils give finesse and freshness, while biodiversity is protected without herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Each vine is treated with care, allowing the Sangiovese to express its purest identity and the terroir’s authentic energy.
Winemaking approach
The winemaking process follows traditional fermentation on the skins for about 15 days, using indigenous yeasts. A soft pressing (not exceeding 1.3 bar) preserves the delicacy of aromas and tannins. The wine then rests for 3 months on its natural lees, followed by 10 months in concrete tanks for a slow and natural evolution. This patient, non-invasive approach enhances purity, balance, and authenticity. The result is a clean, elegant Sangiovese true to its origin.
Tasting notes
Color: bright ruby red, vivid and luminous.
Nose: aromas of red berries, cherry, and pomegranate, enriched by subtle floral and spicy nuances.
Palate: dynamic and fresh, with a fine tannic texture and a dry, savory finish. The balance between structure and acidity makes it both graceful and energetic, with a long, harmonious persistence.
Food pairings
Biagio Antico 2023 pairs beautifully with traditional Italian dishes such as tagliatelle with ragù, roast meats, and aged cheeses. It also complements grilled white meats or rustic soups. Best served at 18–20 °C, it expresses the warmth, generosity, and authenticity of Romagna in every glass.

Ancarani Winery
History
The Ancarani Winery rises among the gentle hills of Oriolo dei Fichi, near Faenza, in the very heart of Romagna’s wine-growing area. Its story began in the 1960s, when the Ancarani family started cultivating vines with deep respect for the land and its rhythms. Today, Claudio Ancarani and Rita Babini continue this heritage, turning traditional farming into a project of artisanal winemaking. Over time, the estate has become a benchmark for those who seek honest wines — true reflections of Romagna’s terroir and character. The goal is not to follow trends, but to preserve authenticity and express tradition through every bottle.
Vineyard Philosophy
In the vineyard, Ancarani follows a philosophy centered on respect for biodiversity and natural balance. Only native Romagna grape varieties are cultivated — Sangiovese, Albana, Famoso, and Centesimino — each thriving in the estate’s sandy, Pleistocene-era soils. The vineyards are managed according to organic principles, with minimal intervention and entirely manual work. Claudio and Rita believe that great wine can only come from healthy, living soil, where every vine grows in harmony with its environment.
Approach in the Cellar
In the cellar, Ancarani’s approach is guided by a desire to express the true character of each vintage. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified using artisanal methods, with indigenous yeasts and minimal use of sulfites. The wines are authentic and pure, shaped by tradition yet alive with contemporary sensitivity. Aging takes place slowly, often in large barrels, with no technological manipulation. Every bottle becomes a sincere expression of Romagna’s identity and soul.
Vision and Territory
For Claudio and Rita, wine is more than a product — it is a cultural expression of place and people. Ancarani’s philosophy emphasizes ethics, sustainability, and transparency. The estate focuses on quality over quantity, producing wines that speak honestly of their origin. Today, Ancarani stands as a symbol of authentic, independent winemaking, embodying the modern spirit of Romagna’s rural heritage.
