Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2014 – Massolino
Winery Philosophy
The Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2014 by Massolino is the purest expression of the Serralunga d’Alba terroir, one of the most prestigious areas for Barolo production. In the winery, Massolino adopts a strict yet respectful approach to nature and the winemaking process. Each vintage is followed with patience, never rushing the maturation process of the wine, which ages for an extended period in large Slavonian oak barrels. The philosophy is to let the wine express the best of its terroir with minimal human intervention, ensuring the final result is as pure and representative of the vineyard as possible.
Vineyard and Vinification
The Vigna Rionda is one of the most historic and prestigious crus of Serralunga d’Alba. This vineyard benefits from an ideal exposure, allowing perfect maturation of the Nebbiolo grapes. The soils are rich in limestone and marl, making them perfect for producing superior-quality grapes, which, in the case of Vigna Rionda, give rise to a powerful and long-lived Barolo.
The grapes are hand-harvested, with only the best bunches selected to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness and integrity of the fruit. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for a long maturation process that lasts around 60 months. This extended barrel aging allows the wine to develop great complexity without overpowering the Nebbiolo character with oak influences.

Sensory Description
Color
The Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2014 presents an intense garnet red color, tending toward ruby with age, with orange reflections typical of a wine that has aged for a long time. The color is deep, bright, and captivating, with remarkable intensity, which foreshadows great complexity.
Nose
On the nose, the wine reveals extraordinary complexity, characteristic of Massolino’s reserves. Aromas of ripe red fruit such as cherry and plum are intertwined with sweet spices, tobacco, and a delicate hint of vanilla. Notes of leather, dried roses, and subtle hints of licorice further highlight its aging potential and oak influence.
Palate
On the palate, the Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2014 is full-bodied, structured, and powerful, yet elegant and harmonious. The tannins are well integrated and silky, giving the wine a velvety texture, while the freshness and minerality typical of Nebbiolo perfectly balance its structure. The finish is long and persistent, with a complexity that invites another sip.
Pairings
The Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 2014 is a wine for contemplation, best enjoyed on its own to appreciate its full range of flavors. However, it pairs perfectly with rich, structured dishes such as roasted red meats, braised meats, game, and aged cheeses. It’s also ideal with flavorful dishes like truffles and ragù pasta. Thanks to its elegance, it’s also perfect for pairing with traditional Piedmontese cuisine.

Massolino
The History
Talking about authentic Barolo means talking about Massolino. The winery’s story began in 1896, when Giovanni Massolino founded his estate in Serralunga d’Alba, the beating heart of the Langhe. At that time, wine was more a daily toil than an art, but Giovanni understood that the future would reward those who could respect and enhance the land.
Today, Massolino lives with the same spirit. The fourth generation of the family leads the winery, preserving ancient values while embracing respectful agronomic and oenological practices. Evolution has never meant betraying identity, but expressing it with greater awareness. In this way, Massolino has become one of the most respected names in Serralunga, synonymous with authenticity, longevity, and elegance.
Work in the Vineyard
In the vineyard, Massolino performs the first true act of love for its land. Agronomic management follows a clear principle: intervene as little as possible and listen to nature.
Sustainable viticulture is practiced, aiming to preserve natural biodiversity. Each plot is observed and guided, never forced. The use of chemicals is minimal, while pruning and harvesting are strictly manual.
The soils of Serralunga d’Alba, rich in calcareous marl, are treated gently to avoid compaction and water stress. Only from living soil can grapes be born that create profound and authentic wines.
Each vine is considered unique. The goal is not to maximize yields, but to concentrate the plant’s energy into a few healthy, vibrant bunches.
Work in the Cellar
In the cellar, Massolino follows the same approach: letting the wine speak for itself. Fermentations are spontaneous, macerations are long, and respect for the raw material is absolute.
Time is the most precious ally. After fermentation, the wines mature in large Slavonian oak barrels, allowing for a slow evolution without adding foreign aromas. Aging is patient, never forced.
Every bottle tells the story of the vineyard and the vintage, without chasing trends or using invasive technologies. In the cellar, they listen, observe, and wait. That is how each wine finds its purest form.
The Iconic Wines
Massolino has built its legend on wines that each year tell the most authentic soul of the Langhe. First among them is the Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva, a true icon for Nebbiolo lovers, born from one of Serralunga’s most historic crus.
Alongside Vigna Rionda, the Barolo Margheria and the Barolo Parafada shine, offering different yet complementary expressions of Nebbiolo’s nobility.
Massolino also excels with whites: the Langhe Chardonnay and the Langhe Riesling impress with freshness, precision, and minerality. Every label confirms a consistent philosophy: to narrate the territory sincerely, without superstructures.
