Barolo Nicbarr 2021 – Gian Luca Colombo
Overview
The Barolo Nicbarr 2021 by Gian Luca Colombo is one of the most distinctive and personal expressions of the new Langhe generation. It is a profound, modern Barolo that combines territorial precision and creative freedom, born from the vision of a winemaker who has made the balance between tradition and experimentation his signature. From vineyards in Roddi, Monforte d’Alba, La Morra and Barolo, Nicbarr embodies a mosaic of terroirs that merge into a complex, layered and luminous wine.
History of the wine
The name Nicbarr is an acronym for Nome In Codice Bricco Ambrogio Roeredisantamaria Ravera, referencing the origin of the grapes from Bricco Ambrogio (Roddi), Ravera (Novello and Barolo) and Roere di Santa Maria (La Morra). In 2021, Bussia, one of Monforte d’Alba’s most renowned crus, was added. First released in 2016 as a “gypsy Barolo,” this project began as a bold and experimental idea, which has evolved into a wine that perfectly synthesizes Langhe’s identity with a contemporary approach.
Vineyard philosophy and cellar approach
In the vineyard, Gian Luca Colombo practices sustainable and biodynamic agriculture, maintaining balance with nature through grazing sheep, free-ranging hens and natural soil management. In the cellar, vinification takes place in stainless steel with submerged cap maceration, followed by 18 months of aging in 700-liter barrels and used barriques. The wine then matures for 12 additional months in ceramic amphorae and concrete tanks, with Austrian oak introduced since 2017. The result is a Barolo of remarkable precision, texture and harmony, reflecting both craftsmanship and authenticity.
Tasting notes
Color: deep, bright garnet red with lively ruby highlights.
Nose: complex and layered, offering aromas of cherry in spirit, dried rose, sweet spices and earthy undertones.
Palate: elegant yet energetic, with refined tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish.
Food pairings
Ideal with braised meats, game, grilled red meats and mature cheeses, yet also perfect as a meditation wine. Its structure and aromatic depth make it a Barolo built for long aging, revealing the nuances of each cru over time.
