Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2023 – Gian Luca Colombo
Overview
The Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2023 by Gian Luca Colombo expresses the power and vitality of Piedmont through a genuine and contemporary interpretation. Made from old-vine Barbera, grown with full respect for nature, it balances fruit richness with the lively freshness typical of the Langhe. A wine of character and precision, it reveals Colombo’s ability to combine elegance and substance in perfect harmony.
History of the wine
For Colombo, Barbera d’Alba Superiore has always been a fascinating challenge — a chance to showcase the textural depth and natural acidity that define the Langhe. Grapes from very old vineyards with naturally low yields are hand-harvested at full phenolic ripeness to achieve balance and complexity. Each vintage is a new interpretation, faithful to place but never repetitive, reflecting both instinct and meticulous care.
Vineyard philosophy and cellar approach
In the vineyard, Colombo practices sustainable, biodiversity-focused viticulture, convinced that soil vitality is the foundation of quality. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperature, with maceration lasting 20 to 50 days depending on the vintage. Maturation follows in large oak casks and used tonneaux, preserving purity of fruit while adding subtle roundness and depth.
Tasting notes
Color: bright ruby-red with lively purple hues.
Nose: expressive aromas of ripe red fruit, cherry and graphite.
Palate: juicy and full-bodied yet lifted by a vibrant acidity that brings freshness and balance.
Food pairings
Excellent with meat ragù tajarin, braised dishes, aged cheeses and cured meats, this Barbera combines structure with drinkability, shining both at the table and on its own.
