Flaccianello della Pieve 2017 – Fontodi
The Excellence of Panzano in Chianti
The Flaccianello della Pieve 2017 from Fontodi represents one of the highest expressions of Tuscan Sangiovese. Produced exclusively from estate-owned vineyards located in the prestigious Conca d’Oro of Panzano, this wine is born from the desire to exalt the territory through certified organic farming and high-level winemaking practices. In every vintage, Flaccianello tells the story of strength, purity, and harmony of a unique terroir, in a perfect synthesis of tradition and innovation.
The 2017 vintage was complex, marked by a hot and dry climate, rewarding those who, like Fontodi, managed the vineyards with sensitivity and discipline. The result is a wine of extraordinary concentration, yet always capable of maintaining elegance and freshness.
Vineyard: The Soul of the Conca d’Oro
The vineyards destined for Flaccianello lie at the heart of the Conca d’Oro, a natural amphitheater south of Panzano characterized by galestro soils, rich in rocks and highly draining, perfect for Sangiovese. Cultivation follows certified organic principles, aiming to preserve biodiversity and promote the full expression of the land.
Canopy management, cluster thinning, and manual selective harvesting allow only perfect grapes to be picked, capable of undergoing a long and ambitious aging process.
Winemaking: Precision and Respect
In the cellar, Flaccianello 2017 is vinified through spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel vats, with long maceration on the skins to naturally extract aromas and structure.
The wine is then aged for at least 24 months in French oak barriques, both new and second-use, with a slow maturation process that respects the wine’s natural rhythm. Only after additional months of bottle aging is Flaccianello released onto the market, ready to evolve for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense and deep ruby red color, with violet reflections indicating youth and concentration.
On the nose, the wine offers a powerful and refined bouquet: black cherry, blackcurrant, dried plum, and violet intertwine with notes of sweet tobacco, bitter cocoa, oriental spices, and a subtle mineral hint.
On the palate, it is broad and enveloping, with silky tannins and a solid structure perfectly balanced by vibrant acidity. The finish is very long, complex, with fruity and balsamic returns that invite another sip.
Food Pairings
Flaccianello della Pieve 2017 pairs magnificently with important red meat dishes, noble game such as deer or wild boar, succulent roasts, and braised meats. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses or dishes based on truffles.
