Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 2023 – Patrick Javillier
Depth and structure from one of Volnay’s most iconic crus
Clos des Chênes is among the most prestigious Premier Cru vineyards in Volnay, located in the southern part of the appellation at slightly higher elevation. Its marl-rich limestone soils and optimal exposure give rise to wines of remarkable structure and longevity. Patrick Javillier interprets this historic site with precision and restraint, crafting a Pinot Noir that balances power with elegance and faithfully reflects the terroir.
Winemaking approach
Vinification follows a classical, hands-off philosophy. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats. Aging lasts 18 months in French oak barrels, with around 15–20% new wood. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural texture and aromatic depth.
Variety
100% Pinot Noir
Tasting notes
Color
Deep ruby with garnet edges.
Nose
Layered and expressive, with ripe cherry, blackberry, black pepper, violet, and hints of leather and graphite.

Full-bodied and structured, with firm yet elegant tannins. A lively acidity supports the dense fruit, leading to a long, spicy finish with earthy undertones.

Domaine Javillier
Pure craftsmanship in the Côte de Beaune
Domaine Javillier is located in Meursault, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. At the helm is Patrick Javillier, a discreet but deeply respected figure in the wine world, known for his artisanal, precise, and tradition-driven approach. After studying oenology in Dijon and working in the family vineyards, Patrick gradually built a micro-domaine now totaling just over ten hectares, spread across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Pernand-Vergelesses.
Precision and consistency as philosophy
Javillier’s philosophy is grounded in a pragmatic and respectful vision, starting in the vineyard and culminating in careful winemaking, always aiming for balance between structure and freshness. The vineyard work is sustainable, with minimal systemic treatments and a strong focus on soil vitality. Harvesting is manual, with strict grape selection.
Winery style: clarity and terroir expression
In the cellar, Patrick works with technical discretion, letting the terroir speak. His Meursault wines are known for their precision, mineral tension, and aging potential. The white wines ferment in oak barrels (new wood used in moderation) and age on fine lees with restrained bâtonnage. The reds, though fewer, are classically vinified, with no excessive extraction. The goal is always expressive transparency, never power for its own sake.
A philosophy of silent elegance
Javillier is one of the most underrated yet essential voices in classic Burgundy: no excess, no trend-chasing, just consistent, thoughtful work. His wines stand out for their finesse, integrity, and depth, with excellent aging potential but also surprising drinkability in their youth.
