Sankt Laurent 2024
Wine Overview
Sankt Laurent 2024 is a bold, expressive, and terroir-driven red wine that captures the raw and vibrant identity of the Weinviertel. It combines richness and juiciness with a lively tension that gives the wine both energy and structure. This is not a polished or overly refined expression, but rather a wine that embraces its natural intensity while maintaining balance and elegance. Layered and dynamic, it evolves in the glass, revealing complexity without losing freshness. The result is a wine that feels both authentic and contemporary, offering depth alongside drinkability. Contains sulfites.
Wine History
Sankt Laurent is a traditional Central European grape variety, known for producing wines that balance elegance with depth. In this interpretation, Schödl explores a more direct and expressive style, rooted in the specific conditions of the Kreuthern vineyards. The grapes are harvested in mid-September, ensuring full ripeness while preserving acidity. This wine reflects a modern approach to a historic variety, aiming to highlight its more untamed and vibrant side while maintaining clarity and structure. It represents a bridge between tradition and innovation.
Vineyard Philosophy
The vineyard work is based on sustainable practices, soil health, and biodiversity. Clay and chalk soils in Kreuthern provide structure and mineral tension, essential for the wine’s profile. The continental climate, with its temperature contrasts, allows for slow ripening and aromatic development. Vineyard management is focused on maintaining balance and vitality, avoiding excessive intervention. Manual harvesting ensures careful grape selection, preserving quality from the start.
Winemaking and Grape Variety
After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in large oak vessels, where maceration lasts about ten days. This allows for gentle extraction while maintaining vibrancy. After pressing, the wine is transferred to 300-liter oak barrels for aging in a natural loess cellar with a constant temperature of 14°C. This slow and stable maturation enhances texture and integration. The approach is minimal yet precise, aiming to preserve the true character of Sankt Laurent.

Schödl Winery
History of the Schödl Family
The Schödl winery represents the evolution of a family deeply rooted in Austrian viticulture, where knowledge is passed down long before becoming a business. Mathias, Viktoria, and Leonhard grew up surrounded by wine culture, thanks to their father, a viticulture teacher in Klosterneuburg. Despite this strong influence, they initially pursued different paths, keeping the vineyards as a secondary activity, more emotional than professional. The turning point came in 2017, when they decided to fully commit to the family project. This led to international experiences that shaped their modern vision of wine. Leonhard’s time with producers such as Matassa and Testalonga had a lasting impact, steering the winery toward a more conscious and minimal-intervention approach. From that moment, Schödl became a focused and identity-driven project.
Vineyard Philosophy: Biodiversity and Respect for Nature
Work in the vineyard is central to the Schödl philosophy, guided by the idea of preserving natural balance and enhancing biodiversity. The vineyards are located in the Weinviertel, northeast of Vienna, an area known for its rolling hills and diverse soils. At altitudes between 200 and 250 meters, loess dominates, alongside clay and rocky components, creating ideal conditions for expressive wines. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, allows slow ripening while maintaining freshness and acidity. Organic farming is not just a choice but a necessity: the goal is to build a living ecosystem where vines, insects, and plants coexist naturally. This approach ensures authenticity and complexity in every bottle.
Winemaking Approach: Time, Precision and Tradition
In the cellar, Schödl combines technical expertise with artisanal sensitivity. The family’s passion for Champagne strongly influences their style, particularly in their focus on extended lees aging and slow maturation. The use of the traditional method defines part of their identity, emphasizing structure and aromatic depth. Fermentations are handled carefully, avoiding unnecessary interventions and allowing the wine to evolve naturally. Manual processes such as punch-downs ensure gentle extraction and full control over the process. The result is wines that are precise, energetic, and highly drinkable, with a strong sense of identity.
Territory and Style: Elegance, Freshness and Precision
The Weinviertel is a defining element in the Schödl style. This region, stretching from the Manhartsberg to the Slovak and Czech borders, offers ideal conditions for producing elegant and vibrant wines. The combination of soils and continental climate results in wines with bright acidity, finesse, and purity of expression. The Schödl family interprets this terroir with a modern mindset, constantly balancing tradition and innovation. Their wines are dynamic, evolving over time while maintaining clarity and character. Schödl is today one of the most exciting emerging wineries in Europe, recognized for its authenticity and strong connection to the land.
