The history of wine in the New World (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) is quite recent, especially when compared to that of the Northern Hemisphere; it is marked by some precise dates, the first is 1659 when the East India Company entrusted Jan Van Rieebek with the organization and supervision of the first vineyard field in South Africa; subsequently, in 1685 the Governor of the Dutch Company Simon Van der Stel purchased a vast property of over 750 hectares in the area that we now know as Constantia.
1712 is the year of the first high quality productions thanks to Johan Colijn and Hendrik Cloete; 1859 is the year that the world will remember as the first export of wine from the New World to the United Kingdom.
In Australia and New Zealand the wine will arrive later. In both cases the Movement was born following colonization, and was only able to market its products in the 1960s.
