Suriol Mataro 2019 – Can Suriol
Wine story: the authentic power of Monastrell in Penedès
Suriol Mataro 2019 is made from 100% Monastrell grapes, hand-harvested on October 14, 2019 in the certified organic vineyards of Can Suriol, in the heart of Penedès. Fermentation is spontaneous with only native yeasts, followed by a 10-day maceration on the skins to extract colour, aromas, and structure. After pressing, the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in 500-litre chestnut barrels, where it ages for 6 months. It is bottled on May 19, 2020, without filtration or added sulphites, preserving its pure and honest character.
Vineyards and philosophy: sustainability and Catalan tradition
The grapes come from certified organic parcels cultivated following biodynamic principles. Manual harvesting ensures careful selection of the best bunches, avoiding any synthetic chemicals. Chestnut barrels, sourced from the Montseny forests, are part of a centuries-old Catalan winemaking tradition, adding spicy nuances and a unique softness to the wine.
Winemaking: minimal intervention, maximum expression
The production method is based on natural fermentations, gentle maceration, and chestnut ageing, which enhances the rustic yet fruity nature of Monastrell. With no filtration and no added sulphites, the wine keeps its aromatic complexity and original structure. Over time, it softens while maintaining a vibrant energy.
Tasting notes and pairings
Colour: deep ruby red with violet reflections.
Aroma: ripe black fruits like blackberry and plum, aromatic herbs, and sweet spice from the chestnut wood.
Palate: round and enveloping, with soft tannins, juiciness, and a long, savoury finish.
Pairings: perfect with grilled meats, roasted lamb, game, hearty stews, aged cheeses, and artisanal cured meats.

Can Suriol – Tradition and Biodynamics in the Heart of Penedès
A castle, a family, a wine philosophy
In Catalonia, at the heart of the Penedès region, stands Can Suriol, a boutique winery producing authentic wines in harmony with local tradition. Founded in 1985, it operates within a 15th-century castle in the village of Grabuac, 60 km west of Barcelona. Owned by the Suriol family since the 17th century, it is now led by Assis Suriol, winemaker and guardian of the family legacy.
Sustainability and respect for the land
The estate is energy self-sufficient thanks to solar panels and reuses vineyard waste to create natural compost, promoting agriculture in harmony with the environment.
Vineyards and grape varieties
30 hectares divided into 25 micro-plots, farmed organically since 1996 and biodynamically since 2010. Only native varieties are cultivated: Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Garnatxa Blanca & Negre, Monastrell, Picapoll, Malvasia de Sitges, Ull de Llebre, Xarel·lo Vermell, Sumoll.
Winemaking
Hand-harvested grapes, spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks, and no invasive additives. Wood, when used, is local chestnut from Montseny.
Production
Focused on Penedès and Cava, offering diverse styles deeply connected to the terroir. The Azimut project involves local growers in producing organic wines and sharing the proceeds.
