Grüner Veltliner Ried Gotzenthal 2022
Wine Overview
Grüner Veltliner Ried Gotzenthal 2022 is a refined, structured, and terroir-driven white wine that fully expresses the potential of Weinviertel. Produced from 25-year-old vines rooted in deep loess soils, this wine achieves a remarkable balance between richness and precision. It stands out for its ability to combine texture and freshness, offering a layered tasting experience that evolves in the glass. The long aging on fine lees enhances complexity and depth, while maintaining a vibrant core of acidity. This is a wine that reflects both the identity of the grape and the specificity of the vineyard, making it a compelling choice for those seeking authenticity and elegance in Austrian white wines. Contains sulfites.
Wine History
This wine originates from the Ried Gotzenthal vineyard, located on the slopes of Blumenthal, an area particularly suited to Grüner Veltliner due to its exposure and soil composition. The vines, around 25 years old, benefit from deep loess soils that provide both water retention and mineral expression. Harvest takes place at the end of September, when the grapes reach optimal ripeness while preserving aromatic clarity and structural balance. The project behind this wine reflects Schödl’s commitment to highlighting individual vineyard sites, transforming a specific parcel into a distinctive and recognizable expression. It is not just a varietal wine, but a precise interpretation of place and vintage.
Vineyard Philosophy
The vineyard work is guided by a philosophy focused on sustainability, biodiversity, and respect for natural balance. The hillside location of Blumenthal ensures optimal sun exposure, which is essential for the full ripening of Grüner Veltliner. At the same time, the continental climate of the Weinviertel, with its warm days and cool nights, helps preserve acidity and aromatic definition. The loess soils play a key role, contributing to both structure and finesse. Vineyard management avoids invasive practices, aiming instead to support the natural vitality of the vines and soil. Manual harvesting allows for careful selection, ensuring that only healthy, fully ripe grapes are used. This approach results in wines that are both expressive and true to their origin.
Winemaking Approach and Grape Variety
In the cellar, the winemaking process is designed to enhance the intrinsic qualities of Grüner Veltliner without masking its character. Whole clusters are pressed and left in contact for approximately 12 hours, allowing a gentle extraction of flavor, texture, and mineral elements from the skins. After soft pressing, the must undergoes fermentation in large oak barrels, where it develops complexity and balance. The wine then rests on its fine lees for 12 months, gaining a creamy texture and greater depth. Bottling is carried out without filtration, preserving the wine’s integrity and natural richness. This careful approach results in a wine that is both structured and vibrant, with a clear sense of identity.
Tasting Notes and Food Pairings
Color: bright golden yellow with luminous reflections, indicating both ripeness and structure.
Nose: expressive and elegant, with aromas of exotic fruits, ripe pear, and subtle mineral undertones.
Palate: rich and creamy, balanced by a discreet yet persistent freshness that adds tension and length.
This wine pairs beautifully with spicy cuisine, particularly Asian dishes, as well as white meats, roasted vegetables, and creamy preparations. Its structure also allows it to complement more complex and layered dishes, making it highly versatile at the table.

Schödl Winery
History of the Schödl Family
The Schödl winery represents the evolution of a family deeply rooted in Austrian viticulture, where knowledge is passed down long before becoming a business. Mathias, Viktoria, and Leonhard grew up surrounded by wine culture, thanks to their father, a viticulture teacher in Klosterneuburg. Despite this strong influence, they initially pursued different paths, keeping the vineyards as a secondary activity, more emotional than professional. The turning point came in 2017, when they decided to fully commit to the family project. This led to international experiences that shaped their modern vision of wine. Leonhard’s time with producers such as Matassa and Testalonga had a lasting impact, steering the winery toward a more conscious and minimal-intervention approach. From that moment, Schödl became a focused and identity-driven project.
Vineyard Philosophy: Biodiversity and Respect for Nature
Work in the vineyard is central to the Schödl philosophy, guided by the idea of preserving natural balance and enhancing biodiversity. The vineyards are located in the Weinviertel, northeast of Vienna, an area known for its rolling hills and diverse soils. At altitudes between 200 and 250 meters, loess dominates, alongside clay and rocky components, creating ideal conditions for expressive wines. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, allows slow ripening while maintaining freshness and acidity. Organic farming is not just a choice but a necessity: the goal is to build a living ecosystem where vines, insects, and plants coexist naturally. This approach ensures authenticity and complexity in every bottle.
Winemaking Approach: Time, Precision and Tradition
In the cellar, Schödl combines technical expertise with artisanal sensitivity. The family’s passion for Champagne strongly influences their style, particularly in their focus on extended lees aging and slow maturation. The use of the traditional method defines part of their identity, emphasizing structure and aromatic depth. Fermentations are handled carefully, avoiding unnecessary interventions and allowing the wine to evolve naturally. Manual processes such as punch-downs ensure gentle extraction and full control over the process. The result is wines that are precise, energetic, and highly drinkable, with a strong sense of identity.
Territory and Style: Elegance, Freshness and Precision
The Weinviertel is a defining element in the Schödl style. This region, stretching from the Manhartsberg to the Slovak and Czech borders, offers ideal conditions for producing elegant and vibrant wines. The combination of soils and continental climate results in wines with bright acidity, finesse, and purity of expression. The Schödl family interprets this terroir with a modern mindset, constantly balancing tradition and innovation. Their wines are dynamic, evolving over time while maintaining clarity and character. Schödl is today one of the most exciting emerging wineries in Europe, recognized for its authenticity and strong connection to the land.
