Autocarro Nº 38
Philosophy in the vineyard
Autocarro Nº 38 comes from vineyards rooted in loamy-clay soils with high levels of calcium and silica. The plots are surrounded by trees and laid out North-South on the top of a hill facing South, 60 meters above the Sado river valley. This setting ensures hot days and cool nights, perfect for preserving the wine’s natural freshness and vibrant acidity. Grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected.
Approach in the cellar
This fresh white is a blend of 80% Arinto and 20% Galego Dourado, two Portuguese grapes known for their crispness and minerality. Vinification and fermentation take place entirely in stainless steel tanks to maintain pure aromatics and highlight varietal character.
Colour: Bright straw yellow. Nose: Intense citrus notes with a hint of flint for a subtle mineral touch. Palate: Crisp and lively acidity balanced by elegant minerality and citrus flavours that add length and freshness.

Herdade do Portocarro
An ancient terroir between river and hill
Herdade do Portocarro lies in the heart of the demarcated region Terras do Sado, near the village of S. Romão, in the parish of Torrão. This historic site is a stop for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, between Alcácer do Sal and Torrão. Spanning 142 hectares, crossed by the Sado River, the estate preserves a heritage that dates back to Roman times, as proven by ancient coins and wine amphorae found in the area.
For centuries, this land quenched the thirst of countless travellers and became renowned for the excellence of its wines. After a period when cereal crops took over in the post-World War II era, Herdade do Portocarro has revived its winemaking tradition, blending ancestral knowledge with modern vision.
A name rooted in the land
The name Herdade do Portocarro comes from two elements tied to the local landscape. The “carro” refers to a high point on the property, once a landmark for travellers. The “porto” recalls the riverbank where goods were historically loaded and unloaded from boats navigating the Sado. This strong bond with water and history still shapes the unique character of the wines produced here today.
