Malvasia Nera is a red wine produced by Andrea Pilar at Molino Vitelli, in Umbria and obtained from 100% Malvasia Nera grapes; these are delicately pressed and destemmed and, using indigenous yeasts, ferment spontaneously in steel for 2/3 weeks. Before refining, the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation spontaneously and the fine lees are mixed. Always in steel, the wine ages for a few months with periodic batonnage. Malvasia Nera is rich in floral and fruity aromatic scents, with clear notes of menthol, while in the mouth it is fresh and generous, savory and of good length, ideal with good Umbrian pecorino

Andrea Pilar Malvasia Nera 2022
An authentic and engaging red wine that reveals the most immediate and genuine expression of Tuscan Malvasia Nera, combining freshness, drinkability, and remarkable territorial character.
Overview
Andrea Pilar Malvasia Nera 2022 is a wine that captivates from the very first sip thanks to its extraordinary expressive immediacy. Produced in Tuscany from Malvasia Nera grapes grown on sandy soils with very low organic matter content, it benefits from conditions that naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic concentration. The result is a vibrant and dynamic red wine that successfully combines fragrance, precision, and effortless drinkability. The low-intervention winemaking approach highlights both the varietal character and the identity of the territory, delivering a wine that speaks with honesty and authenticity. Andrea Pilar Malvasia Nera 2022 offers a contemporary interpretation of a historic grape variety while preserving a deep connection to rural tradition and the landscape from which it originates.
History of the Wine
This wine was created with the aim of showcasing the most authentic personality of Malvasia Nera through a respectful and minimalist production philosophy. The 2022 vintage provided healthy, perfectly ripened grapes capable of fully expressing the aromatic qualities of the variety. Andrea Pilar interprets this grape with a direct and distinctive style, avoiding excessive extraction or intrusive aging techniques. The goal is to bring into the glass the memory of traditional harvests, cool cellar environments, and sunlit summer afternoons in the countryside. Every stage of production is designed to enhance the purity of the fruit and the identity of the vineyard, creating a wine that seamlessly combines heritage, tradition, and spontaneity.
Vineyard Philosophy
The Malvasia Nera grapes come from vineyards located at elevations exceeding 350 meters above sea level, in an area characterized by steep slopes and particularly loose sandy soils. The scarcity of organic matter naturally reduces vine vigor, encouraging balanced yields and greater aromatic concentration in the grapes. The altitude helps preserve freshness and aromatic integrity, two essential elements that define the wine’s profile. Vineyard management is based on respecting the natural balance of the vines and highlighting the unique characteristics of the growing area. This careful approach allows the grapes to express both the distinctive nature of Malvasia Nera and the nuances of the Tuscan landscape with remarkable precision.
Winemaking Approach
Andrea Pilar Malvasia Nera 2022 is produced exclusively from Malvasia Nera grapes. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks and lasts approximately 15 to 20 days, accompanied by a deliberately short maceration to preserve freshness and aromatic finesse. Malolactic fermentation is encouraged through aeration of the young wine and regular stirring of the fine lees, a technique that enhances balance and complexity. After spending several months in stainless steel with periodic bâtonnage, the wine completes its maturation in concrete tanks. This approach preserves the purity of the fruit while allowing the various components of the wine to integrate naturally and harmoniously.
Tasting Notes

Food Pairings

It pairs beautifully with artisanal cured meats, rustic appetizers, and traditional Tuscan pasta dishes. Its freshness complements roasted white meats, poultry, and mushroom-based recipes with ease. It is equally enjoyable alongside light grilled dishes and medium-aged cheeses, creating harmonious combinations with simple yet flavorful cuisine.
