Mosel Riesling Neumagener Rosengärtchen Spätlese – Markus Scholtes
Wine History
The Mosel Riesling Neumagener Rosengärtchen Spätlese embodies the elegance and tradition of the Mosel, Germany’s oldest wine region. Markus Scholtes selects grapes from 45-year-old vines planted on slate slopes, producing a limited 500 bottles. This wine reflects his family experience and deep knowledge of the terroir, showcasing the mineral freshness and balanced style typical of high-quality Mosel Riesling.
Vineyard Philosophy
Viticulture is thoughtful and sustainable, with careful hand-harvesting of the best grapes. The slate soil adds complexity and minerality, while vineyard management ensures healthy, ripe fruit. Markus Scholtes aims to produce a Riesling that fully expresses the terroir, balancing natural sweetness, acidity, and aromatic tension typical of Spätlese wines.
Winemaking Approach
Fermentation occurs spontaneously in traditional 1000 L foudres and used barriques, without clarification, with minimal filtration and controlled SO2 addition. This method preserves aromas, minerality, and freshness, enhancing the grape’s natural characteristics. Aging in these vessels ensures balance, complexity, and longevity while maintaining the authentic Riesling style.
Tasting Notes
Color: bright golden yellow with greenish reflections, luminous and inviting.
Nose: elegant and refined, with notes of white flowers, ripe peach, and subtle slate mineral hints.
Palate: soft and harmonious, with delicate sweetness, lively acidity, and a persistent, refined finish typical of high-quality Spätlese.
Pairings
Ideal with baked fish, shellfish, delicate white meats, and refined vegetarian dishes. Also excellent as a contemplative wine or paired with lightly sweet desserts.

Markus Scholtes Winery: Tradition and Innovation in the Mosel
Winery History
The Markus Scholtes winery, located in Neumagen-Dhron, represents the pinnacle of Mosel winemaking in one of Germany’s oldest wine regions. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times, with centuries of grape cultivation on steep, slate-rich slopes. Markus Scholtes, the third generation of winemakers, inherited the family passion and honed his skills alongside his father from an early age. He trained at St. Urbans-Hof under master Nik Weis and later studied viticulture and enology at Geisenheim University, further enriching his professional experience by collaborating with internationally renowned wineries.
Vineyard Philosophy
In the family vineyards, Markus Scholtes focuses on maximum grape quality and environmental respect. Varieties include Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Müller-Thurgau, carefully selected to best express the characteristics of the soil. The vineyards’ steep slopes and slate-rich soil give the wines unique freshness and minerality, balanced by moderate alcohol levels. Grapes are harvested exclusively by hand to ensure the utmost care and selection of the bunches.
Winemaking Approach
At the winery, Markus Scholtes follows a natural and respectful approach to winemaking. The soft pressing of the finest grapes and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, barriques, or 1,000-liter wooden foudres results in authentic and refined wines. No selected yeasts, enzymes, or additives are used, ensuring a product that truly reflects the Mosel terroir and the winemaker’s personality.
Terroir and Wine Style
Markus Scholtes’ wines stand out for their ability to combine tradition and modernity, showcasing the elegance of Mosel Rieslings. The combination of carefully selected varieties, steep slopes, and slate soils gives the wines a vibrant structure and complex aromatic profile. Today, the winery is recognized as one of the region’s most refined, symbolizing winemaking that pursues absolute quality while honoring history and terroir.
